Samuel Peter Swanson (born January 18th, 1983), is an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, score composer, and music producer. He is a full time musician most known as the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist for the unique cover band Handsome Young Ladies from Rochester, New York.
His previous work included being the lead singer/songwriter of Chicago acts Midwest Blue (Johann’s Face Records), Dormlife, and Boomjuice spanning from 2001-2011. In addition to putting out over 10 releases with those 3 acts over a 10-year span, Swanson has also collaborated with other artists (including Me Myself & Rhyme, Vapor Eyes, and Horchata Network) and has produced instrumental music for rappers, singers, podcasts, commercials and independent films.
In 2005, Swanson founded an Independent Record Label called ACR (Alarm Clock Revolution) as a vehicle to release his own music and other music by talented friends of his such as: Dr Manhattan, Unique Chique, Gnight Gnight, and many others… Samuel has toured extensively in the U.S. and has had the chance to play with notable acts including: Smoking Popes, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, 88 Fingers Louie, Juliana Theory, The Academy Is…, As Tall As Lions, Local H, Lucky Boys Confusion, Hidden In Plain View, Showoff, World/Inferno Friendship Society, Digable Planets, Spitalfield, The Hush Sound, 3, Brazil, Jet Lag Gemini, Let Go, Jamison Parker, Teenage Bottlerocket, Colossal, The Honor System, Sherwood, Treaty of Paris, Sundowner, Psalm One, Weatherbox, Secret And Whisper, We Are The Fury, The Ghost, Powerspace, The Flatliners, An Angle, Ryan’s Hope, The Bolweevils, June, The Junior Varsity, Houston Calls, Much The Same, and countless other acts...
Swanson relocated from Chicago to New York in early 2011. He released his debut score as a composer for the official soundtrack, The Illusion of Money (The second volume in a 4-part Documentary Series by Canadian filmmaker Leonard Ulrich), on May 26th, 2015. In 2017 Swanson teamed up with Jesse Sprinkle (Demon Hunter, Dead Poetic, Poor Old Lu, Blank Books) on Drums to form a Cover Band called Handsome Young Ladies. HYL is a three-piece party band that specialize in post-grunge/indie rock interpretations of a wide variety of pop songs from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and 00’s. The band began recording it’s 11-song debut full-length cover album ‘We Got It Covered’ in December of 2017 and finished it in mid-2018. The album was mixed throughout 2018 by Aaron Sprinkle (MxPx, New Found Glory, Story of the Year, Anberlin) with 2 music videos for Sade’s “Smooth Operator” and Elton John’s “Bennie and the Jets” both directed by Shimon Galiley. ‘We Got It Covered’ is set for release on Vinyl and Compact Disc in mid-2019.
In addition to Handsome Young Ladies, Swanson is also in the process of writing and recording a full-length LP in an unnamed punk project with Dan Precision (Rise Against, 88 Fingers Louie) as well as working on his own solo material. Swanson shows no signs of slowing down as an artist and continues to work in all capacities of the creative process and business as his abilities evolve.
Swanson possesses a lyric tenor vocal range and a falsetto that spans three octaves and five semitones. His range extends from D2 to G5. He has been described in reviews as "soulful" and "powerful", notably after the release of Dormlife's "Roses Are Blue" in 2007. Swanson has been directly compared to singers Daryl Palumbo, Patrick Stump, Brandon Boyd, and Elvis Costello in album reviews.
